“This show represents some of my recent work in watercolors and oils, focused on a few of my favorite themes. The Minnesota landscape is one subject I love to paint. Another area I have spent many hours with is small town scenes and cityscapes. I continue to find subjects from a trip to Europe in 2018. But regardless of the subject, the play of sunlight has always been a strong element in my work. It provides a key to creating an interesting design and helps define the center of interest. Creating art brings me to a safe and peaceful place, much like a form of meditation. Hopefully viewing my work will bring the audience to a similar state of mind. There is so much beauty out there once you begin to really look. I find fascinating subjects in many places, including the landscapes of northern and central Minnesota, as well as cityscapes and small-town scenes, where I can practice my skills with perspective. I am especially inspired by the play of light across a scene. It gives me an opportunity to create an interesting and well-designed work of art. Light and shadow can enhance values as well, which is an essential element in watercolors and opaque media as well.
I tend to be a relentless experimenter, so I have taken on two new challenges to widen my horizons. I enjoy the challenge of painting watercolors on the unique yupo surface. In addition, I have returned to painting with oils, quite different than watercolor in character and technique. Painting has become a daily joy for me and an essential part of my routine. Creating art is always a new adventure for me, waiting to be explored.” -Kerry Kupferschmidt
