MLK Community Celebration

An annual event in partnership with the City of St. Cloud

Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy

The annual MLK Community Celebration includes activities over multiple days that offer several ways to get involved and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This event is an opportunity for the Central Minnesota community to come together, engage in conversation and share time together while honoring Dr. King’s dream.

January 18-25, 2025

Saturday, January 18 | 1-4 p.m.

MLK Family Day Celebration

Family-oriented festivities at St. Cloud State University, Atwood Memorial Center.

Activities include:

  • Planetarium showing of “Mysteries of Your Brain” and a Tour the Current Night Sky. “Mysteries of Your Brain” is an immersive animated journey into the human brain. Journey along with a curious girl and her crow tour guide as you learn how your brain makes you, well, you! In the interactive “Tour of the Current Night Sky” portion of the show, you won’t need any fancy viewing equipment as you learn about some of the things we can currently see beyond our planet, including constellations, planets, and other cool objects. *once the show starts and the lights go out, we can’t open the door. Registration required.
  • SCSU History faculty and students will give brief presentations on Martin Luther King’s 1960s activism. History students will lead short walks between the Atwood Memorial Center and the Planetarium featuring three stops to consider episodes in Dr. Kings life and influence on the Civil Right Movements. At each of three locations, students/faculty will make brief comments on King’s actions in Selma, Birmingham, and Chicago to further explore the multifaceted elements of his work and what he and many others set in motion for our nation.
  • Play Super Smash Brothers Ultimate and Mario Kart in our Esports Arena.
  • Bowling in the Underground, Atwood Memorial Center.
  • Great River Children’s Museum – DinoBlocks activity.
  • United Way of Central MN – Imagination Library.
  • Face painting, kids activities, plus much more!

MLK Spirit Day is a praise and worship celebration. This is a Christian focused event that speaks to the Christian side of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Across denominations, the goal is to bring faith communities together to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.

The signature MLK Community Celebration will commence at 8 a.m. at the River’s Edge Convention Center. A community conversation will kick off the event, along with the announcement of the 2025 MLK Celebration Humanitarian Award, Dexter R. Stanton Essay and Visual Art Contest winners, and keynote address by Dr. Evelyn Hill.

Dr. Evelyn Hill was elected as Commissioner of the fourth district of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County in November 2023. She has served on the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education from July of 2009 through January of 2018. During her tenure on the Board of Education, she was the President from July 2014 through July 2018. She values education and believes every child has the right to receive a quality education. She embraces the fact that we are lifetime learners.
